IP transit connects a network to the global internet.
An IP transit provider carries traffic between a customer network and the rest of the internet. Unlike an ordinary broadband connection, transit is commonly delivered to a router or autonomous system in a data centre and can use BGP to exchange routes.
How it works.
The customer connects to the provider at an agreed port speed and commits to a level of traffic. The provider advertises a route to the wider internet and supplies routes back to the customer. IPv4 and IPv6 can be supported over the same service.
Who needs IP transit?
It is typically used by internet service providers, hosting platforms, content networks, communications providers and organisations running their own ASN. Smaller businesses normally need broadband or a leased line instead.
