FTTP vs FTTC vs SoGEA: UK Business Broadband Explained
Understand how FTTP, FTTC and SoGEA connect UK business sites and what their access technology means for speed, voice and migration.

FTTP, FTTC and SoGEA are UK access technologies used to connect premises to broadband services. The names describe how the physical access is delivered; they do not by themselves define provider support, router quality, service levels or resilience.
FTTP: fibre to the premises
FTTP uses fibre for the access path to the premises rather than a copper final section. It can provide higher download and upload options than cabinet-based services, subject to the product available at the address.
FTTC: fibre to the cabinet
FTTC uses fibre to a street cabinet and copper from the cabinet to the premises. Performance is influenced by the copper path and distance. Openreach currently describes business FTTC options up to 76 Mbps downstream and 15 Mbps upstream, with actual speeds varying.
SoGEA: broadband without a traditional phone service
SoGEA provides an FTTC-style broadband path without a traditional analogue telephone service on the line. Businesses needing voice use a separate digital phone or hosted system. It still uses copper from the cabinet where delivered over that access.
How they differ in practice
- FTTP: full-fibre access, generally with broader speed potential and no copper final section.
- FTTC: cabinet fibre plus copper, often tied historically to a phone-line product.
- SoGEA: cabinet fibre plus copper broadband without the traditional analogue voice service.
Voice and the digital transition
Businesses should not assume an analogue socket will continue to support phones, alarms or payment devices after migration. Inventory special services and move business calling to an appropriate IP platform with suitable power and continuity arrangements.
Availability and predicted performance
Check the exact address and product estimate. Nearby premises may have different availability. For FTTC and SoGEA, copper length and quality affect results. FTTP options also vary by network and provider.
Business requirements beyond speed
Compare support, repair targets, router management, static addressing, monitoring and backup. A managed business broadband service should state these operational elements clearly.
When Ethernet access may be relevant
Sites needing stronger service guarantees, symmetrical capacity or a dedicated access design may consider EoFTTC or EoFTTP Ethernet access, or a leased line. These are not simply faster names for retail broadband.
