What Is an ASN and Why Do Network Operators Use One?
An ASN identifies a routing domain that exchanges routes with other networks. Understand its role, responsibilities and when it is relevant.

An Autonomous System Number, or ASN, identifies a network routing domain that presents a consistent policy to other networks. It appears in BGP paths and helps operators understand which autonomous systems an internet route traverses.
ASN and IP address space are different
An ASN identifies the routing system; an IP prefix identifies an address range. Organisations using their own portable prefixes and multiple upstreams may need both, but possessing one does not automatically grant the other.
How it appears in BGP
When networks exchange routes, the AS path records autonomous systems associated with an announcement. Operators use this and other attributes for loop prevention, policy and diagnosis. The shortest visible path is not always the selected path.
When a business may need an ASN
Typical cases include multihoming with independent routing policy, operating a network service, or announcing portable address space through IP transit providers. Most ordinary business broadband customers do not need one.
Registration and ongoing responsibility
Resources are administered through the relevant internet registry framework and require justified use and maintained contact data. Operators must manage route objects, security, upstream coordination and changes. An ASN is not a marketing badge.
Operational safeguards
- Document prefix ownership and authorised origins.
- Apply prefix and maximum-route filters.
- Protect routers and configuration access.
- Monitor announcements and reachability.
- Keep registry and incident contacts current.
Managed alternatives
A provider can often supply resilient connectivity and assigned addressing without the customer operating BGP. Compare the business outcome, portability needs and internal expertise before accepting routing responsibility.

Questions before requesting an ASN
Ask whether the organisation genuinely needs independent routing policy and portable addressing, whether two capable upstreams are available, and who will operate BGP every day. Establish monitoring, out-of-hours support and a documented exit plan if the network design changes.
If those requirements are absent, provider-managed addressing and routing are usually simpler. The decision should reduce a real technical dependency rather than introduce a public routing resource that nobody is equipped to maintain.
