Internet Resilience for Business: Backup Circuits, Diverse Routes and Failover
A second circuit only improves resilience when its route, carrier, capacity, failover and recovery behaviour have been properly designed and tested.

Business internet resilience is the ability to keep essential services operating, or restore them predictably, when a component fails. Buying a second circuit is useful only when the failure modes, routing and application behaviour have been considered.
Start with operational impact
List the activities that depend on internet access: calls, payment systems, remote access, cloud applications, email and customer services. Define which must continue, for how long and at what reduced performance. This sets a proportionate resilience target.
A backup circuit must avoid common failure
Two services may share a duct, exchange, access carrier, building entry point, router, power supply or DNS dependency. Ask what diversity can be confirmed and what remains outside the design. “Different provider” does not automatically mean physically diverse.
Choose suitable backup technology
A second fixed line can provide stable capacity, while mobile backup can avoid some local cable faults but depends on indoor coverage and network load. Some sites combine managed fibre leased-line connectivity with a different business broadband or mobile path.
Automatic failover
The edge device needs reliable health checks and routing rules. Checking only whether a local interface is up can miss an upstream outage. Avoid tests dependent on one remote target. Set sensible timers so a momentary issue does not cause constant route changes.
Applications and public addresses
Outbound web access often moves easily, but active calls, VPNs, allowlists and hosted services may not survive a public-IP change. Document which sessions reconnect automatically and which need application or DNS design. Notify relevant suppliers of approved backup addresses.
Capacity during failure
The backup does not always need to match the primary, but it must carry essential demand. Prioritise calls and operational applications, then restrict large updates and cloud backups. A managed business broadband service can form part of the design after capacity and route checks.
Power, hardware and people
Both circuits fail if the router, switch or optical equipment loses power. Consider UPS runtime and replacement hardware. Document who receives alerts, who can access the site and how staff work if the building itself is unavailable.
Test failover and recovery
- Disconnect the primary in a controlled window.
- Confirm essential applications and calls.
- Measure detection and recovery time.
- Check alerting and escalation.
- Restore the primary and verify stable return.
- Record results and fix gaps.
