What Happens During a Business Leased-Line Installation?

A practical stage-by-stage explanation of leased-line surveys, wayleaves, carrier work, site preparation, testing and service handover.

A business leased line is not usually activated like an ordinary broadband order. The process can involve carrier planning, a site survey, landlord permission, civil engineering, fibre delivery, customer equipment and coordinated testing. Understanding those stages makes the project easier to manage.

1. Requirements and quotation

The provider confirms the exact address, bandwidth, contract requirements, handoff, IP addressing and preferred termination point. A quotation is based on available carrier information, but non-standard construction may only become clear after survey.

2. Order validation

Legal entity, site contacts, access hours and landlord details are checked. Keep the premises description consistent, especially in multi-unit buildings. Incorrect unit or postcode data can send planning down the wrong path.

3. Survey and route planning

The access carrier assesses how fibre can reach the building and where equipment will be installed. The survey may identify blocked ducts, new civils, internal cabling or power requirements. I.T Communications manages the service while selected carriers provide the relevant physical access.

4. Wayleave and landlord approval

Permission may be required for work on private land or communal building areas. Neither the customer nor provider should assume a landlord will approve the proposed route immediately. Identify authorised signatories and building-management contacts early.

5. Site preparation

Prepare rack space, power, patching, cooling and a clear route to the handoff location. Confirm who supplies the router and optical termination. If the firewall or LAN cannot support the ordered speed, plan that upgrade before service handover.

6. Construction and installation

Carrier teams complete external and internal work, then install and commission the access equipment. Dates can change when civils or third-party permissions are involved, so keep existing connectivity running until the new service is accepted.

7. Testing and handover

The circuit is tested before the managed Layer 3 service is handed over. Validate throughput in both directions, addressing, routing, monitoring and fault contacts. Record device serials, demarcation points and configuration ownership.

8. Migration and resilience testing

Move services in a controlled window. Test hosted voice, VPNs, cloud applications and any allowlists. If there is a backup circuit, perform a failover and recovery test rather than treating its presence as proof of continuity.
