3CX Ad-Hoc Support: One-Off Help Without a Contract

A practical guide to one-off 3CX support: common reasons to contact an engineer, hourly pricing, supported-system requirements and preparing for a remote session.

3CX Ad-Hoc Support — remote help with no ongoing contract, illustrated with a desk phone, headset and laptop.

When your business needs help with a 3CX phone system, an ongoing support contract is not always the right starting point. You may have a specific calling problem, need to change how calls reach your team, or want an experienced engineer to review an existing configuration.

3CX ad-hoc support gives you access to remote technical assistance for a defined amount of engineering time, without taking an ongoing support contract.

I.T Communications offers one-off 3CX support at £95.00 + VAT per hour, with a minimum purchase of one hour and a maximum of four hours per booking. Our 3CX Ad Hoc Support service page explains the requirements, pricing and appointment process.

What is 3CX ad-hoc support?

Ad-hoc support means purchasing help as you need it. It is also described as one-off 3CX support or pay-as-you-go 3CX support.

Instead of entering a continuing support arrangement, you purchase time for an engineer to investigate a problem, assist with a configuration task or review part of your system. The work is carried out remotely and is subject to the service’s supported-system requirements.

For example, you might need assistance because calls are reaching the wrong extension, a new phone will not provision, or your holiday routing needs updating. A focused support session gives you a way to get help with that particular requirement.

When is one-off 3CX support useful?

Inbound or outbound calls are not working as expected

You may be able to receive calls but have trouble making them, or find that a particular number is not reaching the intended destination. A 3CX engineer can investigate the relevant configuration and available diagnostic information to help identify where the problem lies.

It helps to describe exactly what happens. “Outbound calls from extension 204 fail, but other extensions work” gives the engineer a clearer starting point than “the phones are broken”.

You need to change call routing

Changes to your business can mean changes to the way calls are handled. Remote 3CX support can assist with ring groups, call queues, digital receptionist menus, office hours and holiday routing.

Before the session, write down the intended result: who should receive the call, how long their phones should ring and where the call should go if nobody answers.

Users need help with phones or 3CX apps

Support can cover extension and user configuration, provisioning issues, remote users, and the 3CX Windows, Web and Mobile Apps.

Tell us whether the issue affects one person, one device, an entire office or every user. Include the phone manufacturer and model where relevant, and explain whether the same user can make calls through another device or app.

You want a configuration review or upgrade assistance

An ad-hoc session can also be useful when you want advice on an existing deployment or assistance planning an update. Share the current 3CX version, hosting arrangement and intended outcome before the appointment.

The scope and time needed depend on the system. An upgrade, wider redesign or complex fault may need further work beyond the initial session.

How much does 3CX ad-hoc support cost?

I.T Communications charges £95.00 + VAT for each hour of remote engineering time. Support is purchased in whole-hour increments:

  • 1 hour: £95.00 + £19.00 VAT — £114.00 total.
  • 2 hours: £190.00 + £38.00 VAT — £228.00 total.
  • 3 hours: £285.00 + £57.00 VAT — £342.00 total.
  • 4 hours: £380.00 + £76.00 VAT — £456.00 total.

Payment is required in advance of the support session. Check the service page for current booking availability and instructions.

You are purchasing engineering time. A support session does not guarantee that every fault can be resolved within the time purchased. If you are unsure how much time to select, contact our team with a description of the issue before purchasing.

What should you check before requesting support?

Our ad-hoc service is for installations that follow supported 3CX deployment practices. The SIP trunk provider, phones, endpoints and deployment method matter when deciding whether the requested work falls within scope.

For a cloud-hosted PBX with desk phones at your premises, those phones must use a suitable supported connection architecture. Under our service requirements, this would normally be a 3CX SBC or an appropriate site-to-site VPN between your network and the hosted environment.

An SBC, or Session Border Controller, connects local IP phones to a remote 3CX system. Some supported phones can also provide SBC functionality as a router phone; suitability depends on the deployment. See the official 3CX SBC guidance for background, and ask us to confirm your arrangement if you are unsure.

Ad-hoc support does not include:

  • Unsupported SIP trunk providers, SIP phones or endpoints.
  • Installations that do not follow recommended 3CX deployment practices.
  • Troubleshooting third-party equipment or services outside the 3CX environment.
  • On-site engineering visits.
  • Replacement or supply of faulty hardware.

We may identify changes that are needed before troubleshooting can continue. Time spent identifying an unsupported or incorrectly configured deployment is still chargeable support time.

How to prepare for a remote 3CX support session

Providing useful information beforehand helps the engineer make the best use of your purchased time. Prepare:

  1. System details: your 3CX version, edition if known, approximate user count and hosting type.
  2. Provider and device details: your SIP trunk provider and relevant phone models.
  3. A clear problem description: what fails, who is affected and when the problem started.
  4. Recent changes: updates, new phones, routing changes or network changes made before the issue appeared.
  5. Examples: relevant error messages, screenshots and approximate times of affected calls.
  6. Administrator access: confirmation that you have, or can arrange, the access needed to investigate the system.

Do not include passwords in the problem description or send them by email. Arrange the necessary access with your engineer.

Ad-hoc support or an ongoing support arrangement?

One-off support can suit a defined task or occasional need for specialist help. If your organisation regularly needs administration, maintenance or technical ownership, consider whether ongoing 3CX support would better suit its needs.
