Why Two Data Centres Matter for Business Voice Resilience

Two data centres can strengthen voice resilience, but only when shared dependencies, failover behaviour and operations are properly designed and tested.

Running business voice across two data centres can reduce dependence on one building or infrastructure stack. It is not automatic resilience: the design must account for shared carriers, routing, software state, power, DNS and operational control.

Separate the failure domains

Identify what is truly independent at each location: power feeds, cooling, fire zones, carrier entry points, network hardware and management access. Two racks in different buildings can still share a single upstream or configuration error.

Voice platform state

Accounts, numbers, call routing and recordings may need replication or recovery procedures. Understand what moves automatically and what requires intervention. Avoid assuming a backup server is current merely because it is powered on.

Inbound and outbound routing

Carrier and network routes must be able to reach the surviving platform. Test number routing, emergency-call arrangements and outbound identity during a failure. The managed network design is as important as compute location.

Endpoints and site access

Phones and applications need a supported way to reconnect. DNS caching, firewall rules or hard-coded addresses can prevent this. Customer sites also need working internet and power; dual data centres cannot repair a failed local access circuit.

Capacity under failure

The remaining site must handle the required concurrent calls, registrations and management load. Decide whether full or reduced service is expected and monitor capacity continuously.

Operational testing

  • Simulate loss of each platform location.
  • Place inbound, outbound and internal test calls.
  • Verify applications and handsets reconnect.
  • Check alerting, support access and rollback.
  • Record timings and any manual steps.

Design for degraded operation

Document what callers and staff experience while one site is unavailable. Some reporting, recordings or administration may be temporarily reduced even when core calling continues. Agree those limits in advance and ensure support teams can distinguish expected degradation from a second fault.

Run planned exercises at least after material platform or network changes. A failover last tested before a software upgrade, carrier migration or firewall replacement should not be assumed to behave in the same way.
