Colocation and cloud hosting solve different infrastructure problems. Colocation provides data-centre space, power and connectivity for customer-owned equipment. Cloud services provide virtualised or managed resources on provider infrastructure. The better fit depends on control, workload and operational capability.
Hardware ownership
With colocation, the customer normally buys and maintains servers, storage and network equipment. Cloud hosting shifts much of the hardware lifecycle to the provider, while the customer remains responsible for applications, data and configuration according to the service model.
Scaling and predictability
Cloud resources can often be changed quickly, which suits variable or growing workloads. Colocation can suit stable, high-value equipment or specialist hardware, but expansion requires planning rack space, power and procurement.
Connectivity
London colocation and connectivity can provide controlled network handoffs and access to carrier services. Cloud connectivity may traverse the public internet or private links. Map latency, bandwidth, egress and resilience requirements.
Responsibility and skills
Colocation does not administer the customer server unless a managed service is contracted. Cloud does not automatically secure applications. Document responsibilities for patching, backups, monitoring, access, replacement and incident response.
Cost comparison
Compare equipment, power, rack, remote hands, licences and staffing with cloud compute, storage, data transfer, support and reservation terms. A low starting price can change with sustained resource or egress use.
Hybrid designs
Some organisations colocate core or specialist equipment while using managed virtual servers for flexible workloads. The integration and recovery plan matter more than the label.
